Today's Bible Verse
Itís simply perverse to say, If my lies serve to show off Godís truth all the more gloriously, why blame me? Iím doing God a favor. Some people are actually trying to put such words in our mouths, claiming that we go around saying, The more evil we do, the more good God does, so letís just do it! Thatís pure slander, as Iím sure youíll agree.
Weíre All in the Same Sinking Boat
So where does that put us? Do we Jews get a better break than the others? Not really. Basically, all of us, whether insiders or outsiders, start out in identical conditions, which is to say that we all start out as sinners. Scripture leaves no doubt about it:
Thereís nobody living right, not even one,
nobody who knows the score, nobody alert for God.
Theyíve all taken the wrong turn,
theyíve all wandered down blind alleys.
No oneís living right,
I canít find a single one.
Their throats are gaping graves,
their tongues slick as mudslides.
Every word they speak is tinged with poison.
They open their mouths and pollute the air.
They race for the honor of sinner-of-the-year,
litter the land with heartbreak and ruin,
Donít know the first thing about living with others.
They never give God the time of day.
This makes it clear, doesnít it, that whatever is written in these Scriptures is not what God says about others but to us to whom these Scriptures were addressed in the first place! And itís clear enough, isnít it, that weíre sinners, every one of us, in the same sinking boat with everybody else? Our involvement with Godís revelation doesnít put us right with God. What it does is force us to face our complicity in everyone elseís sin. MSG
Romans 3 :7 - 20
Generous in loveóGod, give grace!
Huge in mercyówipe out my bad record.
Scrub away my guilt,
soak out my sins in your laundry.
I know how bad Iíve been;
my sins are staring me down.
Youíre the One Iíve violated, and youíve seen
it all, seen the full extent of my evil.
You have all the facts before you;
whatever you decide about me is fair.
Iíve been out of step with you for a long time,
in the wrong since before I was born.
What youíre after is truth from the inside out.
Enter me, then; conceive a new, true life.
Soak me in your laundry and Iíll come out clean,
scrub me and Iíll have a snow-white life.
Tune me in to foot-tapping songs,
set these once-broken bones to dancing.
Donít look too close for blemishes,
give me a clean bill of health.
God, make a fresh start in me,
shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life.
Donít throw me out with the trash,
or fail to breathe holiness in me.
Bring me back from gray exile,
put a fresh wind in my sails!
Give me a job teaching rebels your ways
so the lost can find their way home.
Commute my death sentence, God, my salvation God,
and Iíll sing anthems to your life-giving ways.
Unbutton my lips, dear God,
Iíll let loose with your praise. MSG
